Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP)
The Okanogan Conservation District connected with various partners across Okanogan County to update the Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) in 2024. This document was first developed in 2009, and was last updated in 2013. The CWPP is a vital document for the future of wildfire resiliency in Okanogan County.
This update was funded through Washington State's Climate Commitment Act.

What is a Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP)?
The CWPP is a planning document that captures the collaborative process, values, and priorities of stakeholders who are working to prepare for wildfire. This process involves gathering community input, assessing data, and local decision making to prioritize and implement wildfire mitigation actions that can occur within 5-10 years.

How did the process work in Okanogan County?
Community and Partner Engagement

The CWPP was a collaborative process centered around community and partner involvement. Over 100 partners and 1,000+ community members contributed to the update of this plan. The CWPP process was led by a core planning group and a larger general group of diverse partner groups to ensure accurate representation across Okanogan County.
CWPP partners included
stakeholders from local, state, and federal agencies, tribal government representatives, fire responders, cities/towns, residents, community members, and many other community organizations.
Hazard and Risk Analysis Data

This document includes up-to-date information and fire modeling to assess local hazards and identify strategic investments to mitigate wildfire risk and promote preparedness. This includes GIS mapping to assess wildfire behavior patterns, historically burned and unburned areas, past and planned forest treatments, and much more.
Data also includes historical information and local knowledge and experience from those who work on-the-ground and residents of Okanogan County.
Prioritization and Implementation

Community input and values, hazard risk and data analyses, local expertise and knowledge, and the availability of resources and district capacity were all major factors in determining the direction and feasibility of projects prioritized
in the 2024 CWPP.
The CWPP planning committee met regularly to gather, discuss, and assess data, and set the priorities and project implementation actions for the next 5-10 years.
